From Geneva to Westminster

From Westminster’s halls of decree
To the theological shores of Geneva;
We challenge Calvin’s determinism,
For the gospel plain and free;
First to stand for truth and freedom,
And to keep our conscience clean;
We defend the grace of Scripture
Against deterministic decree.

From Augustine unto Calvin,
From Geneva unto Dort;
Through Beza, Edwards, Westminster,
The decrees have marched forth;
From the Puritans to Princeton,
From the classroom to the screen;
You will find the same old doctrine
Wearing theological sheen.

From Edwards to the Modern Pulpit

From the halls of Princeton Seminary
To the platforms of today;
Through the voices of Sproul and Piper,
The message marches on its way;
Hodge and Warfield, Bavinck, Grudem,
MacArthur and Hendryx too;
With the language ever changing,
The decree remains in view.

They will speak of willing choices,
They will speak of human blame;
They will say the will is willing
Though the outcome stays the same.
Yet we ask the simple question,
As the Scriptures we examine:
If the choice cannot be otherwise,
In what sense is freedom “free”?

The Counter-Determinist Response

Our flag of Scripture’s unfurled
From the first page to the last;
We will not force the Bible
Through the creeds and schools of past;
In the plain text of the Scriptures,
In the gospel’s gracious call,
We proclaim that Christ is offered
By God’s saving grace to all.

Here’s a challenge to the doctrine
That makes freedom merely seem;
For a choice that can’t be otherwise
Is not the freedom Scripture means.
Let the Calvinists defend it,
Let the scholars make their case;
We will keep proclaiming Scripture:
God’s salvation comes by grace.

Not for Calvin, not for Arminius,
Not for creed or system’s scheme—
But the Word in its plain reading:
“Is that what Scripture means?”

You will find us always standing
For the gospel plain and free.
You will find us always asking:
“Where is that in Scripture please?”
